Puerta Vallarta Likes Its Bells

In a past post, we talked about staying at the Hacienda San Angel, a beautiful property that was the home of Richard Burton in a past life.  It remains a hotel like no other. We went back this Spring

Since the passing of its co-founderJanice Chatterton, Hacienda San Angel has gotten smaller. The property across the street where we once stayed is now the BellView Hotel Boutique. Bell view is appropriate. This is a view from our table in their exquisite Italian restaurant La Capella.

The Lady of Guadalupe Church tower remains prominent on the skyline. Go there for the view. Stay there for the food.  I am a bit of a snob about Italian food. This meal was right up there with Al Forno’s in Providence , RI. A small place with a modest sized menu, La Capella has standards for guests as well. No kids. No pets. No flip flops.

We stayed in the Angel’s View suite at Hacienda San Angel, a beautiful room with wonderful views of the water. It was just up from one of the pools.

After three days in Old Town, we headed to a new place, the Hotel Moussai.  A very different experience. Adults only. All inclusive. Great restaurants. A killer rooftop bar and pool. Access to the beach, but who wants to leave the pool. Its where the beautiful people are.

The rooms are exceptional, which is a reasonable expectation given they start at $500 per and our corner suite went for closer to $1,000. But when your patio has a hammock and a hot tub……

Breakfast in Angel’s View

Puerta Vallarta is growing. Fast. The experience of Old Town and the Malecón is getting more jammed with tourists. Still a welcome alternative to the Cancuns and Cabos of Mexico. But I fear it may be too crowded for us in a few years.
